13 Unique Minnesota Wedding Venues Worth Knowing About

Minneapolis has a lot of venues to offer, but it can be hard to sift through the “cookie cutter” and find something a little different. That’s exactly why I put this list together.

As a Minneapolis wedding photographer, these are the wedding venues I genuinely love. These are spaces with real character, honest logistics, and the kind of atmosphere that doesn’t need much from you to feel incredible.

Better yet, not a single venue in this list is a golf course or rustic orange barn.

Minneapolis City Hall Rhoutnda

Minneapolis, MN – Downtown

website // reviews

Minneapolis City Hall is an active government building — and yet, the architecture makes it one of the most striking places to get married in the city. Inside, the space opens into tall multi-story corridors with marble floors, carved stone details, and stained glass windows throughout. The central rotunda and staircase are what the building is most iconically known for.

In terms of logistics, there are two ways to get married here. During public hours (6am–6pm), couples with only witnesses can use the Rotunda at no cost if their judge agrees to perform the ceremony there. On the other hand, a private Rotunda rental runs $1,000–$2,000 for Thursday through Sunday and is the better option for any ceremony with 5+ guests or when you want seating and privacy. Learn more about how to get married at Minneapolis City Hall here.

Iconic For:

  • The most affordable ceremony option in Minneapolis — no venue fee during public hours
  • Historic Romanesque rotunda with marble floors, carved stone, and stained glass

Best For:

  • Ceremonies up to 40 seated guests with a 1–2 hour rental window.
  • Couples who want a meaningful day without high venue costs.

Frequently Asked Questions about Venues

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FULL-SERVICE VENUE AND A NON-FULL SERVICE VENUE?

A full-service venue bundles catering, bar service, sometimes coordination, and basic rentals into one contract. You work primarily with their vendors. In contrast, a non-full-service (or “raw”) venue rents you the space and lets you bring in whoever you want.

HOW MUCH DOES AN WEDDING VENUE COST IN MINNESOTA?

Your venue and catering together will likely be your single biggest wedding expense — usually 20 to 40 percent of your total budget.

WHAT’S THE ROLE OF THE VENUE COORDINATOR?

A venue coordinator works for the venue and is responsible for all things related to the space itself. Specifically, you can expect them to open and close the venue, set up or reset venue-owned items like tables and chairs, oversee heating, cooling, lighting, and restrooms, and manage in-house catering and bar service (if those are provided).

However, they aren’t managing your timeline, coordinating your vendors, or acting as your advocate. For that, you’ll want either a full-service wedding planner or a day-of coordinator you hire independently.

WHAT ARE SOME UNEXPECTED COSTS I SHOULD ASK ABOUT?

Ask about cake cutting fees (some venues charge per slice), corkage fees for outside alcohol, overtime charges if your event runs long, mandatory security personnel, required gratuity on food and beverage, and early vendor access or load-in fees.

HOW CAN I SAVE MONEY AT MY FAVORITE VENUE?

First, book an off-peak date–January through March are typically more affordable at venues. Some venues also offer different rates for Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays. Additionally, having fewer guests directly lowers your food and beverage minimums.

HOW DOES CATERING WORK AT WEDDING VENUES?

It varies significantly by venue. Some venues require in-house catering exclusively. Others are fully open-vendor, meaning you hire any licensed caterer you want. Many fall somewhere in between—a preferred vendor list with limited outside options.
