Cliffside Anniversary Couples Session at Tettegouche State Park

Shovel Point at Tettegouche State Park

Tettegouche State Park is one of the most breathtaking fall photo locations along the Minnesota North Shore–especially in September. It’s the kind of place that calls to outdoorsy couples who value wild spaces and quiet, meaningful traditions. Dria and James’ relationship grew along Lake Superior, so this space isn’t just scenic—it’s sacred. This place is spiritually connected to their story in a way that words barely touch.

For this session, we hiked up to one of Tettegouche’s most iconic overlooks: Shovel Point. The trail climbs stairs through pines and opens to dramatic cliffside views. From up there, Lake Superior stretches endlessly into the horizon. The air was crisp, the leaves were glowing, and the view was everything.

Their Go-To Photographer Since 2021

This photo of me with Dria and James means more than I can put into words.

We first met in real life three years ago for their engagement session along the Minnesota North Shore. In 2022, I photographed their intimate wedding at Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Powwow Arena. And now, returning to the cliffs of Tettegouche State Park for their anniversary session felt like a thread tying all those moments together—past, present, and still unfolding.

There’s something special about standing beside a couple whose story you’ve had the honor of documenting for years.

The Sweetest Picnic Tradition with Betty’s Pies

One of my favorite things about their story is how it’s filled with traditions—big and small. At their wedding, they had Betty’s Pies catered—yes, the real deal. And let’s just say, things got delightfully messy. One of them took a pie to the face (I won’t spoil who… but you can see it here in their wedding blog post). So of course, sharing a slice of pie on their anniversary has become a sweet little tradition. This year, they brought it with them up the cliffs. As the sun dipped below the trees, they sat down together, split a slice, and laughed like they always do. Simple, sentimental, and so very them.

As the sky shifted into blue hour, we hiked down toward the lake. Lake Superior has always been part of their story—it’s where their relationship grew and where they come to reconnect year after year. Let’s just say I am obsessed with how cinematic their dusk couples photos are.

To capture this session, I used both 35mm film and digital photography—a hybrid approach I love. As a Minnesota film photographer, I love being able to offer my couples the best of both worlds. Curious about how they compare? Check out this post for side-by-side film vs. digital examples and why I choose both.
