When the land has held your childhood and now your vows… it’s a different kind of sacred.
Maisie and Hotsy’s Minnesota backyard farm wedding had it all—baby goats, alpacas, peacocks, florals everywhere, and velvet couches tucked into the lawn like conversation nooks. The day was alive with color and personality, every detail brimming with meaning. And they turned tradition upside down with a cocktail hour before the ceremony.
Sunset Wedding Ceremony and Ring Warming
Instead of following tradition, Maisie and Hotsy started their day by joining guests at cocktail hour. There were lawn games, a kissing booth, mini golf, and plenty of time to wander the farm and visit the animals (and sneak them a lil treat).
Before the start of the ceremony, the couple invited everyone into a ring warming ritual. Each guest held the bands for a moment, blessing them with love before passing them along. It felt powerful, like the entire community was woven into their commitments.
Guests began the ring warming and slowly made their way to the ceremony space. Everyone was greeted with mismatched wooden chairs and church pews in front of the porch of Maisie’s childhood home. During this time, Maisie slipped away for a surprise dress change right before her ceremony timed perfectly with the setting sun.
Family-Style Pig Roast Barn Reception & Romantic Late Night Portraits
After the ceremony, guests gathered in the family’s freshly renovated blue barn. Dinner was a family-style pig roast buffet served across long tables—encouraging laughter, conversation, and plenty of seconds.
Later in the night, I pulled the couple aside for a few quick photos under a tree strung with twinkle lights. Music drifted out from the barn’s dance floor, and for a few minutes it was just the two of them—laughing, dancing, and taking it all in. I photographed them on both film and digital so we could move fast in the dark while still capturing that cool late night film glow. There’s something about closing a wedding day with late-night portraits that always feels so fun.
Their real 12 hour wedding timeline example
Their vision was so unique we built a 12 hour timeline to capture it. If you’re wondering how much time you might need for your own wedding, this real timeline is the perfect example.
Figuring out how much coverage you’ll need can be tricky. But from what I’ve seen, couples are always grateful they booked more time as it allows the day to unfold naturally, without rushing through the moments that matter. So I’m sharing their exact timeline as an example, in case it helps as you start planning your own. And as always, send me a message if you’re interested in chatting about what working together can look like.
