If you’re a foodie couple who loves a fancy dinner date, then you’re going to love these unique engagement photos.
Anika and Nic started their engagement session at Red Rabbit, their favorite Italian restaurant in St.Paul off of Grand Ave. Then we walked to St. Paul Creamery for neon-lit ice cream. As a Minneapolis engagement photographer, this is exactly the kind of session I love shooting! A fun date night that looks and feels like real life.

It was just… them. On a date.
Us hanging out, chatting, laughing.
And I got to document it with some organic direction and editorial flare!

Fancy Italian Restaurant Date Engagement Photos
I love the cinematic modern aesthetic at Red Rabbit in St. Paul. For the couple, it’s the place where they celebrate within their neighborhood, split oysters, steal bites of pasta. I love of the couples bar photos with deep red stools and dark modern features. The patio was beautiful and thankfully vacant (cold Minnesota temperatures worked in our favor!). We had the space to ourselves for a few outdoor moments.
These indoor engagement photos captured the intimacy of their actual restaurant date nights—candid moments between bites, mid-conversation laughter, the way they lean into each other when the second drink arrives. We really got to know each other even better sitting, chatting, and eating some of the best freaking pasta ever.

Unique Neon-Lit Ice Cream Shop Engagement Photos
After dinner, we walked down Grand Ave to St. Paul Creamery for some of the best homemade ice cream in the Twin Cities. Waffle cones, obviously.
I’m obsessed with the old-school red and white striped exterior of this shop. The retro signage. The neon lights at dusk. The neon sign night-time ambiance creates this cinematic, nostalgic vibe that made the night feel complete.
As a St.Paul engagement photographer, my hot take is that night engagement photos are SO underrated. They’re rich, moody, and full of depth. The lighting possibilities after sunset are often more creatively interesting than golden hour. I promise I can create beautiful lighting even after the sun goes down.

What to Know About Planning an Unique Engagement Session in St.Paul
Yes, always communicate with the business ahead of time. I handle this coordination for my clients—we’ll reach out, explain what we’re doing, and usually choose off-peak hours to be respectful of their operations. Most local spots are excited to be featured while others sometimes have photo permit fees.
DO WE ACTUALLY EAT THE FOOD DURING OUT RESTAURANT ENGAGEMENT SESSION OR JUST POSE WITH IT?
You actually eat. Seriously.
I work in waves—shooting while you’re naturally interacting (passing dishes, toasting, mid-conversation), then giving you space to actually eat and exist without a camera pointed at you. I help guide and prompt the fun photo moments and also give space to enjoy the environment. Half the time we’ll be chatting together at the table enjoying each others company.
WHAT IF OTHER PEOPLE ARE AROUND DURING OUR ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS?
This happens, and it’s not a problem I shoot in a way that uses artful angles to isolate you from background distractions. Sometimes others at dinner adds ambient energy for a few photos but most times I frame shots to minimize their presence and respect their privacy.
WHAT TIME SHOULD WE SCHEDULE A RESTAURANT ENGAGEMENT SESSION?
Off-peak hours work best: 2:00-4:30pm (between lunch and dinner rush) or right when they open for dinner service. Communicating with the businesses beforehand helps us understand the best timing.
CAN WE DO ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS IN WINTER WITHOUT FREEZING OUR ASSES OFF?
Yes, and indoor date night engagement sessions are the secret weapon for Minnesota winter. Indoor photo sessions are especially smart during November-March when outdoor photos require puffy coats that hide your outfit and deal with brutal cold, frozen fingers, and racing against a 4:30pm sunset.
WHY IS GRAND AVE IN ST. PAUL GOOD FOR ENGAGEMENT PICTURES?
Grand Ave is walkable with mature tree canopy, historic brick and sandstone storefronts, and a photogenic charm that feels authentic to St. Paul. I love the candid urban moments here—walking hand-in-hand past sidewalk cafes and local boutiques, stopping at park benches mid-conversation, leaning against vintage light poles, the natural interactions while exploring the city. You can easily hit up 2-3 locations within a few blocks (restaurant, ice cream shop, vintage storefronts, residential streets) without needing permits.
WHAT MAKES AN ENGAGEMENT SESSION NONTRADITIONAL AND UNIQUE?
Nontraditional engagement sessions skip the standard “pretty location + posed portraits” formula in favor of experiences that actually reflect your relationship. The difference is in both location and my approach. Unique engagement photos come from choosing places that have meaning to you, then documenting your time there in a candid, documentary style rather than forcing a photoshoot aesthetic.
HOW LONG AFTER GETTING ENGAGED SHOULD WE DO ENGAGEMENT PICTURES?
There’s no required timeline, but most couples do engagement photos 6-12 months before their wedding. Many choose to switch things up and do engagement photos in a different season than their wedding for a variety of final imagery.
