Queer Surprise Proposal at Como Zoo Conservatory Sunken Gardens

As a Minneapolis queer proposal photographer, I love helping couples create intentional, private experiences like this surprise engagement at Como Park’s Sunken Gardens. Amanda and Vivi had explored Como Park Zoo over the winter when Vivi said something in passing that Amanda never forgot: “I can’t believe you can get married here…did you know they do tours?”

Months later, Amanda told Vivi they were taking a “tour” of the Sunken Gardens to see if it might be a good ceremony space. What Vivi didn’t know was that Amanda had already reserved the space—not for a tour, but for the question that would change everything.

With proposals, timing is everything. Amanda and I met up beforehand to map out the plan. We walked through where she’d kneel, how Vivi would move through the space, and where I would step in so the moment could happen naturally without distraction.

We even coordinated little details, like leaving jackets and purses behind on the bench and when I would sneak in unnoticed. When Amanda got down on one knee, I was already in place to capture Vivi’s face in the exact moment of realization.

The adrenaline, the emotion, the flood of “is this really happening?” leaves everything a blur. That’s where photos step in. They become the anchor, the proof, the reminder that it wasn’t just a dream.

This is why I take a documentary approach, especially for proposals. I create a loving environment where couples can be fully themselves while I document the real emotion as it unfolds. Just a living, breathing story you’ll never forget.

Documented on both 35mm film and digital for timeless proposal photography.

Tips If You’re Also Wanting to Photograph Your Proposal

his isn’t a studio session—this is real life, and proposals don’t have a re-do button. Having a photographer who knows the logistics of your chosen spot makes a huge difference. Here are a few tips if you’re planning something similar:

1. Reserve the Proposal Space

At Como Park Sunken Gardens (and many other indoor gardens or venues), you need a timed reservation for privacy. Book in advance, and know exactly how long you’ll have the space. That window is your whole proposal experience and also accessible to vendors—so plan accordingly.

2. Work With a Proposal Photographer Who Knows Whats Up

An experienced proposal photographer isn’t just showing up with a camera—they’re part of the plan. You want someone who’s game to scout, plan, hide, hop on the phone, and document it without disrupting the moment.

3. Scout the Spot in Advance

Scouting beforehand means knowing where you’ll kneel, where your partner will stand, and where your photographer will step in. It also helps plan for the angles, hiding spots, and best use of light. Even a quick walkthrough ensures the proposal unfolds naturally while still being beautifully documented.

4. Let the Moment Land

This is big. Let your partner react. Give them space to cry, laugh, hug, say nothing at all. That shock and joy is gold—and you don’t need to perform or move into photo mode right away. I’m capturing it from a distance, letting you just be. Sit. Hug. Jump. Cry. Laugh. Let the joy feel uninterrupted.

5.  Ease Into the Portraits

A good photographer will read the room and gently ease into interacting and directing engagement portraits. I’ll guide gently and keep it candid, so the images reflect that real post-engagement glow without pulling you out of the moment.
