This one’s for the couples who’d rather have fun at the fair than stand in a grassy field.
Valleyfair in Shakopee, Minnesota isn’t just an amusement park—it’s a mid-century Americana dream for cool engagement photos. For Mikayla and Kyle’s engagement photo session, we spent the evening riding the carousel, enjoying a milkshake, playing fair games, and taking in the sunset on the ferris wheel.

Vintage Carousel Engagement Photos at Valleyfair
The whole reason we wanted to explore valley fair was because its one of the very few places in Minnesota with an authentic old-school merry-go-round. I’m obsessed with the warm flashing lights and ornately painted horses.
It’s pure nostalgic Americana. This is what cool engagement sessions look like when you prioritize fun over formality.

Retro Diner and Jukebox Film Engagement Photos
A date night complete with a red-and-white retro diner, a colorful jukebox, and a shared strawberry milkshake.

Later, we stepped outside just as the sun started to set. The classic glass brick wall caught the golden hour light perfectly! I’m obsessed with the way her eye is shining in that last bit of sun. And capturing it on 35mm film? PERFECTION.

And can we talk about how effortlessly cool they looked? Her red tassel top, messy space buns, and red star bell bottoms were so cool. Kinda like edgy meets fun county fair energy. He repped a graphic t-shirt from Duluth Trading Co with a camo cargo shorts that were perfectly authentic and definitely matched the vibe.

Cool Engagement Photo Ideas
Cool engagement photo ideas come from choosing locations with built-in personality—places where you can actually do something together instead of just posing. Here are some ideas to bring to your engagement photo session:
1. Incorporate Unique Props & Sentimental Mementos for Your Engagement Photos
Think about what’s already in your pockets, your car, your daily routine. This couple brought their vintage film viewer that he used to propose. Every photo that it’s in allows for the whole proposal story to come flooding back. Your version might be concert tickets, your relationship journal, a map of where you’re eloping, or literally anything that exists in your real life. Plus sunglasses. It’s always a perfect accessory for some outfit flair and posing.
2. Let your outfits feel like an elevated version of what you already wear.
Wear something that feels like your personality and functions for the activities you’re doing. So if you live in band tees and jeans, wear your fav tee and your best jeans. Comfort creates confidence. Confidence photographs well.
3. Incorporate real life date night activities
After photographing engagements for over seven years, I’ve learned that the best photos are the ones where something is happening. Cook together. Play a game. Get coffee at your go to spot. Browse a bookstore. Hit up an arcade. The activity doesn’t have to be profound or Pinterest worthy. When you’re focused on something greater than the camera, your engagement photos become more like cinematic documentation of your actual relationship.
4. The most fun photos happen in places you’d never expect without me as your photographer.
Laundromats. Ice cream shops. Parking garages. Gas station with good neon. Weird roadside attractions. Your home. Your late night dive bar karaoke spot. Anything can become a vibe when it’s you and me!
