Lyndale Rose Gardens is a beautiful spot for an engagement session, especially in the spring when it’s in bloom. This park in the heart of the Twin Cities offers a variety of nature trails, floral gardens, and serene fountains, with Lake Harriet nearby. It’s the perfect location to capture those vibrant, romantic spring engagement photos.

Good things to know about a photo session at Lyndale Rose Gardens

When is the park in bloom?

 The Lyndale Rose Gardens are at their peak bloom from April to June, with June typically showcasing the biggest flush of flowers. The gardens are beautiful from mid-April (or after the snow melts) to mid-October. One of my favorite times to photograph is in May when the tulips, peonies, and crab apples are in bloom in the Peace Garden. Do you need a photography permit?

Yes, you need a photography permit for any sessions in a Minneapolis park, including the Lyndale Rose Gardens. The permit costs $47 for 1.5 hours of still photography and it’s best to arrange this at least 10 days in advance. You can obtain a permit from the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board website.

When is the best time of day for photos?

The best time for engagement photos is about two hours before sunset, during the golden hour. This time of day at the Lyndale Rose Gardens offers a beautiful blend of pockets of shade and golden sunlight. Midday can be challenging due to harsh sunlight with minimal shade, so planning your session for late afternoon or early evening is ideal.

Are pets allowed in the gardens?

Yes, pets are allowed in the Lyndale Rose Gardens, making it a perfect spot if you want to include your furry friend in your engagement photos. However, since the park is busy, it might be challenging if your dog is reactive or excitable.

how do I avoid crowds?

The park is quite popular, especially during peak bloom and on weekends. Scheduling your session during a weekday can help avoid larger crowds. Sunrise or early morning sessions tend to be less crowded. Working with an experienced, local photographer who knows the best photo spots and can skillfully edit out any photobombers can make a big difference.

First, you’ll want to bring a neutral throw blanket for cute sitting pictures with snuggling picnic vibes. Additionally, mosquitoes can be bad here, so I highly recommend bringing bug spray. It can be frustrating to get eaten alive and leave your photoshoot with lots of itchy bumps.
